What you will achieve
- Save a longitudinal route.
- Compare hydraulic grade at two valid times.
Step-by-step tutorial
How to compare day and night longitudinal profiles
Compare node elevation and hydraulic grade along the same route at two simulation times.
You can also follow the written stepsThe written steps and explanations in this chapter describe the workflow. The YouTube player loads only when you select Watch tutorial.
Before you start
- Run an extended period simulation.
- Choose a continuous route with at least three links when possible.
01
Define the same route
Select profile nodes or links in order and save the route. The time comparison must use exactly that route.
- Several links make losses and local changes easier to read.
- Check the order before opening the profile.
02
Choose two times
Select a base time and comparison time from available results. The legend must identify both curves unambiguously.
- Compare times from the same run.
- Confirm which curve represents day and night.
03
Read elevation and hydraulic grade
Elevation represents route nodes; temporal curves represent calculated hydraulic grade. Observe slopes, element-related discontinuities, and differences between times.
Do it in WatDis
- Save a route with at least three links.
- Choose daytime and nighttime results.
- Explain one difference using legend and units.
Common mistakes
Comparing different routes
Keep the same path so the difference represents time, not another selection.
Confusing elevation and hydraulic grade
Identify each line in the legend before interpreting their separation.
